Interview with Hall of Fame – Styling

19 Apr 2025

I have had the fortune to work alongside Deborah from Hall of Fame – Styling for a number of years now. She has been my ‘go-to’ hair and makeup stylist throughout my 40 over 40 Project, and also for my brand and headshot sessions too. She is fabulous at what she does, and a real gem when it comes to styling my clients, because she really listens to what my ladies ask for, and understands what is (and isn’t) needed for the camera. So I thought I’d interview her to share her expertise in her industry…

How did you get into this career?
I came into this career in an unexpected way. I was made redundant from an office job, which initially felt like a setback, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I decided to retrain and pursue something I was passionate about, so I enrolled at the London School of Makeup. From that point on, I knew I wanted to focus on helping women feel confident and beautiful, especially on their most special days.

How long have you been doing this?
I’ve been working in the wedding hair and makeup industry since 2016. Over the years, I’ve gained so much experience and have been lucky to work with hundreds of amazing brides and their families.

What’s your favourite part of your job?
There’s so much I love about what I do, but my absolute favourite part is meeting new people. It’s such a privilege to spend time with incredible women, chatting and connecting while they’re in my chair. I’ve met so many interesting people with fascinating stories. And, of course, there’s nothing better than seeing someone’s face light up when they look in the mirror after I’ve worked my magic. The confidence that makeup can give is truly powerful, and I love being a part of that transformation.

How should women be looking after their skin in winter?
Winter can be tough on the skin, so it’s important to switch up your skincare routine to combat the effects of cold weather and indoor heating. Hydration is key—invest in a rich, nourishing moisturiser. Exfoliating once or twice a week will help remove dead skin cells, allowing your skincare products to absorb better. And don’t forget SPF! The sun might feel weaker in winter, but UV rays are still present, so it’s crucial to protect your skin year-round.

Winter makeup vs. summer makeup—what’s the difference?
Winter makeup tends to focus more on hydration and longevity. Skin can become drier, so I recommend using cream-based products like blush and highlighter for a dewy, fresh look. Bold lips, like berry or red tones, are perfect for winter as they add warmth and richness to your look.

In summer, the focus shifts to lightweight and long-lasting products. Think glowing skin, minimal coverage, and waterproof mascara or eyeliner to combat the heat and humidity. A good setting spray can be a game-changer in both seasons!

Do you have a top tip?

Always use SPF, even under makeup. Protecting your skin from UV damage is essential, no matter the weather. Look for a lightweight, non-greasy SPF 30+ that works well under makeup to prevent sun damage, premature ageing, and hyperpigmentation.

Set your makeup strategically. Avoid over-powdering your entire face. Instead, set makeup only where it tends to wear off (e.g., T-zone, under eyes). Use a finely milled, translucent setting powder to lock in foundation and concealer without looking cakey.

I don’t like wearing lots of makeup. How can I keep my makeup feeling light?
Less is definitely more if you prefer a natural look. Focus on a good skincare routine to create a smooth base, and then use lightweight products like a tinted moisturiser or BB cream. You can also mix foundation with a moisturiser to thin it out; use sparingly to even out skin tone. Cream blushes, bronzers, and highlighters are great for a fresh, natural glow. For eyes, stick to neutral tones and try a brown mascara instead of black for a softer finish. The key is enhancing your features rather than masking them.

How often should you clean your brushes / replace your makeup?
Clean your makeup brushes regularly! Dirty brushes are a breeding ground for bacteria and can lead to breakouts. Use a spray sanitiser daily if you’re short on time but aim for a thorough clean weekly. The same goes for your makeup products; spritz them to keep bacteria at bay, and don’t worry, it doesn’t ruin pressed powders; just make sure they are dry before closing the lid. As for replacing makeup, follow the little logo on the side of the product—this tells you how many months it’s safe to use after opening. Mascara, for example, should be replaced every three months or, for an easier reminder, at the start of each season.

Do you have a myth buster to share?
A common misconception is that makeup for photo shoots needs to be thick and heavy. That’s not true! Modern photography and high-definition cameras can capture natural, glowing makeup beautifully. The key is proper preparation, using the right products, and focusing on good skin. With the right techniques, your makeup will look flawless both in-person and in photos without feeling cakey or overdone.

I know from working alongside Deborah, personally attending a makeup workshop hosted by her, and also having my pre-photoshoot makeup styled by her, that Deborah has a wealth of information and experience to share, is infinitely patient and kind, and exceptional at what she does. Thank you so much Deborah for sharing your wisdom in this interview!
